Etymology: Neither Solmsen Unt. 255 (*Ϝιελ- to γίς (= Ϝίς) ἱμάς, Lat. vieō `bind, plait') nor Kalén GHÅ 26 (1920) : 2, 105ff. (*Ϝεισελ-ελοπες to Skt. veṣṭate `wrap round' and *ἔλοφος `tie, strap', cf. ἀργέλοφοι{{)} convinces. Non-IE; β(ε)ιελ-οπ-; -οπ- is a frequent Pre-Gr. suffix (καλαῦροψ).
